Welcome FASD United’s new Intern, Liv! She will be dipping her toes into the unique sectors of our organization during her time with us, but we’ll let her introduce herself:
“Growing up I always thought my dream job was to work as a lawyer, specifically working with sexual misconduct. I initially went into college majoring in Justice and Law. In my sophomore year, I decided to take a public health class out of curiosity. After the first day of that class, I called my parents immediately to tell them I thought I found that passion. I knew instantly that public health was not only something I was passionate about but also a field of work I desired to be in.
Later that week, I officially switched my major to Public Health. I am now a Junior at American University and care deeply about providing assistance to at-risk individuals. This summer I interned at the Family Justice Center, which is under the Office for Women in Westchester. During my time there, I served as an advocate for domestic violence victims, assisting them in securing Orders of Protection, navigating child support procedures, and addressing custody matters. I also learned how to create and administer safety
plans, such as helping individuals get access to safe shelters, change locks, and assist them in court. I collaborated with my wonderful boss and co-worker to assess how to approach each unique case. During my time at the center, I gained a deep understanding of how to deal with individuals who are navigating trauma.
The work I did at times could be emotionally taxing, however, it was also incredibly fulfilling. I left the office every day knowing I did something to improve someone’s situation. Even if my contribution was “small,” such as offering someone a tissue as they cried, actively listening to their story, or helping them fill out a form, I was doing something meaningful by providing support. This is where I discovered what brings me gratification – helping people.
When searching for where I would want to intern next, FASD United grabbed my attention right away. I was looking to work for an organization that shares a common goal of helping individuals, raising awareness, and advocating for change. However, my main goal was to make a difference. I wanted to work for an organization that makes strides every day to change people’s lives for the better and help those struggling to thrive regardless of their situation. Just like I had experienced before, I wanted to be able to say at the end of every day that I had helped someone.
Eventually, I did a deep dive into FASD’s website, looking at the various articles linked and the general overview. I quickly learned that FASDs are incredibly overlooked, stigmatized, and prevalent in our society. I was shocked and frustrated since throughout my education, I had learned little about FASD. I thought it was not only incredibly unfair- but that FASD is a cause that needs much more attention brought to it and a cause that I was very interested in.
Overall, I am enthusiastic about the opportunity to contribute my skills, experience, and passion to this organization. The work that FASD United does aligns with my own values, and I am honored to join the team.”
