About Us

FASD United was established in 1990 as the National Organization on Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (NOFAS). The logo’s circle of rainbow colors symbolizes unity and the diverse richness of communities working together to improve outcomes for individuals and families affected by fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD)

Activist Patricia Munter founded the organization after learning about the effects of prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) during visits to New Mexico and South Dakota. She united leaders like U.S. Senator Tom Daschle, nurse Cecilia Fire Thunder, and author Michael Dorris to create a national organization.

After moving its headquarters to Washington, D.C. in 1991, FASD United focused on connecting families and advocating for FASD-informed resources and services. Our efforts have led to significant progress, including, but not limited to, our one-of-a-kind Family Navigator program.

FASD United continues to push forward as a just movement to prevent PAE and support those living with FASDs and their families.
