CIFASD Research

FASD United is a proud member of CIFASD, the Collaborative Initiative on Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders. This consortium aims to inform and develop effective interventions and treatment approaches for FASD, through multidisciplinary research involving basic, behavioral, and clinical investigators and projects.


Sleep and PAE

San Diego State University

They are interested in assessing young adults with a history of PAE and typically developing young adults. Participants will wear an OURA ring (a ring that measures activity/sleep) to monitor sleep at home for two weeks. They will also complete questionnaires and an online behavioral test at home.

Researchers from the Healthy Generations Lab are seeking individuals with FASD to participate in a health and mental health research study. Participants must be able to visit the study site at the University of Calgary in person for approximately 3 hours. As a thank you for your time, you will receive a gift card.

BRAIN-online is a new web-based screening tool that assesses cognitive and behavioral features known to be associated with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD). It was developed by the SDSU Center for Behavioral Teratology as a first step to determine if you or someone you care for might have an FASD.

Through the Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) Research Lab, this study is for children and adolescents who were exposed to alcohol before birth. This study tests the use of the web-based neuropsychological assessment tool BRAIN-Online which can be completed at your home.

Criteria:

  • 8-16 years of age with a history of confirmed PAE and/or FASD
  • Recently completed a neuropsychological evaluation OR is on the waiting list for one

FMF Connect Pro

University of Rochester

FMF Connect Pro through the University of Rochester teaches providers how to do routine screening of prenatal alcohol exposure with all clients, apply DSM-5 diagnosis for FASD, and support families using the FMF Connect app.

The goal of this research study is to understand the healthcare experiences of pregnant people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Trigeminal Nerve Stimulation for Children With PAE

This is a study of a treatment called Trigeminal Nerve Stimulation (TNS) which is FDA-approved for children with ADHD. We are testing it in children with ADHD and PAE.

TNS is a new treatment that provides a very low amount of stimulation to nerves in the forehead during sleep. Participants place a strip that looks like a band-aid across the forehead each night before going to sleep. This is done every night for 4 weeks.

Criteria:

  • Children 8-12 years old showing inattention, impulsivity, or hyperactivity and who have been exposed to alcohol prenatally
  • Children do not need to have a prior ADHD or FASD diagnosis to be eligible.
  • 3 In-person visits and evaluations
  • The treatment is done by the parent or caregiver at home.

Glimpses of FASD is a living experience opportunity for those living with FASD to share their story, in their own words. These short videos will help inform research about PAE and FASD. FASD United is especially interested in highlighting the successes, strengths, and achievements of people with FASD and their challenges. In sharing these positive stories through a strengths-based lens, we aim to counter the harmful effects of stigma and bias.

  • Anyone with PAE and/or FASD can participate
