Advocacy Alert – Your FASD Living Experience is Needed for a Report to Congress
Major Advocacy Alert:
An agency of the Federal Government (the Government Accountability Office or GAO) wants to hear how your disability affects your health care. Responses to a short survey will inform a report to Congress. TAKE THE SURVEY HERE.
This is a huge opportunity for the FASD community to have our voices heard. Imagine the impact this report could have if GAO was flooded with responses from the FASD community, including self-advocates, parents, and caregivers from across the country.
We know that people with FASD face tremendous barriers to care, including stigma and a lack of awareness and understanding. We also know that sadly many providers do not fully understand FASD and its effects. Congress needs to know this as well.
FASD United’s Policy Center is dedicated to achieving public policy outcomes on behalf of individuals living with FASD. We are calling on our community of advocates and families to take part in this important survey so that policy makers recognize how much FASD impacts communities and how great the need is to implement policy solutions. This survey is an important tool in our efforts, along with our continued outreach to members of Congress and their staff as we push for passage of the FASD Respect Act.
The GAO survey is open to adults with disabilities OR caregivers of adults with disabilities. Stories shared will not include your name. The Government Accountability Office, or GAO, is an independent Federal agency that works for Congress.
The short survey asks participants to explain their challenges in getting health care due to limited accessibility or no accessibility. This offers a place to share your experiences of facing barriers to receiving healthcare services and how your needs were or were not properly accommodated. By sharing your personal story in this survey, you can take an important step towards improving outcomes for the FASD community.
