As we close out February, we want to celebrate National Caregiver’s Day, February 16th. To do this, we celebrate Laura Bousquet, an extraordinary caregiver and advocate in the FASD community. With deep dedication, Laura navigates both her son’s journey with FASD and her own recent diagnosis, offering a unique dual perspective on the challenges and triumphs of caregiving. Laura’s life, rich with the roles of parent, grandparent, self-advocate, and FASD United Family Navigator, mirrors the unpredictability and resilience required in caregiving.

“I often compare the FASD journey to a game of Chutes and Ladders, lots of ups and downs, with a few status quo days sprinkled here or there. I’ve learned that my own parenting journey is always evolving based on creative strategies or a particular challenge my son may be experiencing on a certain day. It is a journey of acceptance and growth.” Her analogy of the FASD journey to Chutes and Ladders perfectly encapsulates the unpredictable nature of this path—filled with both setbacks and advances, demanding constant adaptation and growth.

Her adopted son, Sean Patrick, shares this journey, highlighting the long and often exhausting road to a correct diagnosis. Laura’s realization that the accommodations made for Sean Patrick also benefited her led to a profound moment of self-recognition at an FASD Summit. This epiphany set her on a path of self-discovery, culminating in her own FASD diagnosis. The process was overwhelming, yet it unveiled a new understanding of her life’s challenges and strengths.

The diagnoses have not only offered explanations for past difficulties but have also deepened the bond between Laura and Sean Patrick. Their shared experiences foster a unique empathy and connection, strengthening their relationship and enhancing their daily coping strategies. Laura’s approach to caregiving is infused with empathy, informed by her personal experiences with FASD. This insight allows her to offer Sean Patrick not just support but a nurturing environment that acknowledges his neurodiversity and promotes his development.

Yet, Laura’s story is also a testament to the resilience needed in caregiving, especially when caring for individuals with FASD. It’s a journey marked by challenges but also by profound human connections. Laura’s narrative is a powerful reminder of the impact one person can have, inspiring compassion and understanding that extend far beyond the immediate sphere of FASD.

This story also casts light on societal stigmas surrounding FASD and prenatal alcohol exposure, underscoring the need for informed professionals and greater community awareness. Laura’s commitment to education and advocacy is crucial in challenging misconceptions and promoting a deeper understanding of FASD, exemplifying the importance of upcoming awareness campaigns like National Social Work Month and National Developmental Disabilities Month.

Laura’s advice to those exploring a potential FASD diagnosis emphasizes the importance of self-awareness, support, and recognizing the value in all experiences. Her journey underscores the critical role of self-advocacy and the need for personalized accommodations.

As we honor caregivers on National Caregiver’s Day, we extend our deepest gratitude to Laura Bousquet for her bravery in sharing her story and her commitment to the FASD community. Her contributions embody the true spirit of caregiving, and we thank caregivers everywhere for their dedication and support of their loved ones. And to caregivers of every kind everywhere, thank you. We appreciate all you do.
