We are excited to welcome FASD Maine as the newest member of the FASD United Affiliate Network, a coalition of organizations united to further FASD awareness, provide support, and improve the quality of life for those affected by prenatal alcohol exposure.  

Serving individuals and families throughout the State, FASD Maine is a non-profit organization that “works to increase awareness of FASD through outreach to families, providers, agencies, teachers, law enforcement, community stakeholders, and legislators.”   

Two mothers of children with FASD and a sibling of an adult with FASD came together to co-found FASD Maine in 2019.  The seeds were planted in July 2017 when two mothers attended the first FASD conference in Maine sponsored by FASD United and the Maine Developmental Disabilities Council. 

Shannon Coray of FASD Maine says, “Since 2019, FASD Maine has been working to increase awareness and prevention of fetal alcohol spectrum disorder through education of families, educators, and community stakeholders.  Becoming a FASD United Affiliate seems like the next logical step in our continued growth as an organization.  We are very excited for this next chapter and to be able to leverage all the benefits of an affiliation with FASD United.” 

FASD Maine is making a difference in the FASD community through their ongoing work recruiting speakers and other experts to educate local agencies on FASD.  The organization’s website and Facebook group provides information and updates on their latest initiatives.   

FASD Maine provides caregivers and families with FASD-informed training and support.  They are increasing diagnostic capacity and support services for FASD, while working to reduce the stigma on FASD by educating Mainers to understand FASD and the strengths of those impacted.   

“FASD Maine has recruited health centers across Maine serving prenatal and pediatric patients, for participation in the Boston Medical Center/PROOF Alliance HRSA funded Safest Choice National Learning Collaborative.” The Collaborative provides training in FASD screening and diagnosis, and support of individuals with suspected or confirmed FASD.
